I made an observation in response to a comment yesterday and I thought it might be worth re-iterating as I'm sure lots of people will identify with it. Merilyn was talking about having books in every room of the house - not just fiction, but cooking, knitting, 'homes and gardens' types, and so on - and I said that to be surrounded by books in that way was to have a wealth of possibilities and inspiration always to hand. No matter your mood, interest or inclination, there will be something close by with which to feed your appetite, to take you where you want to go. Isn't that a wonderful thought? Conversely, a place devoid of books would be a bleak one indeed. It may be a cliché but books help to make a house a home.

The picture bottom right is of a pile of the excellent readers' quarterly, Slightly Foxed. They have just brought out what they are calling a catalogue, "to give suggestions for good reads by mining the treasure trove of excellent books that have been around for some while." Books on the list are grouped by subject with fiction and non-fiction together - "serendipity is the operative word" - reading round and about, you might say.
(Which reminds me that that was the whole point of setting up The Reading Map, and it's about time I put up a post proper there!!).
