I am a fan of Sue Gee's work, finding her novels exquisitely written and deeply engrossing, and that goes for the contemporary Reading in Bed with its literary references and wit (there's a short post on it here), to Earth and Heaven
, her beautifully balanced and sustained story of three artists in rural Kent between the wars (some impressions here), and her similarly impressive The Mysteries of Glass (click on the title to see what the Cornflower Book Group made of that tale of a lovelorn Victorian curate). All the above are books of quality and integrity - they are not showy, not gimmicky, they are perfect examples, I think, of what it means for a writer to be artist and craftsman in equal measure.
I am eagerly awaiting another novel from Sue Gee, but in the meantime I still have The Hours of the Night to read, and - good news - there is a collection of short stories, Last Fling, coming out in May.
