Holiday reading - 3

   

    There was a copy of the large and glossy The Hotel Book: Great Escapes Europe in the chalet we were staying in last week, and I had a browse through it, but what I noted particularly were the 'books to pack', the reading suggestions to go with each location.

     Some are predictable, Death In Venice for the Cipriani, for example, and some a touch on the odd side such as Ivanhoe for Amhuinnsuidhe, but others seemed more apt and caused me to add to my wish list. Here are a few, just for interest:

Dreamers by Knut Hamsun - Røisheim Hotel, Lom, Norway

Secret Knowledge: Rediscovering the lost techniques of the Old Masters by David Hockney - Parkhotel Wasserburg, Nordrhein - Westfalen, Germany (part hotel, part museum, this has a vast art collection, apparently).

The Lost Estate (Le Grand Meaulnes) by Henri Alain-Fournier - Les Sources de Caudalie, Bordeaux-Martillac, France

Perfume by Patrick Suskind - La Bastide de Marie, Ménerbes, France

The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann - Hotel Belvédère, Wengen, Switzerland

Stamboul Train by Graham Greene - The Old Railway Station, Petworth, England
