The Other Typist by Suzanne Rindell: a very slick, assured psychological thriller set in New York City's Lower East Side in 1924.
Rose Baker is a secretary at the police precinct, transcribing the statements of gangsters, bootleggers - for Prohibition is in full swing - and murderers. All goes on as usual until the arrival of 'the other typist', the magnetic, daring Odalie Lazare, a world apart from the dowdy, dull Rose. But despite their differences, Odalie takes her colleague under her wing, and soon it's a new side to the city that Rose is seeing, and a new way of living to which she quickly adapts.
An unreliable narrator, a jazz age setting, a very deftly told story - this is a great debut, and Suzanne Rindell is an author to watch.
