Betty Miller is the mother of the polymath Jonathan and author of the Persephone-published Farewell Leicester Square (which I haven't read), but I saw her novel On the Side of the Angels in smart green Virago livery in a charity shop the other day and I thought I'd give it a go.
"First published in 1945, this exploration of the crushing psychological effects of war is 'a sensitively and beautifully told story' ".
Does anyone know it?
I didn't know this but it sounded like the kind of book I might enjoy, and as I'm reading my way through the VMCs (see my other blog) I thought I'd like to read it sooner rather than later! Thanks for finding it!

I bought this book in 1985 as one of my first Virago finds. This was a busy time in my life, but I relished the time I could spare to read this beautifully written book. Do you know I might read it again!

No, I havn't read it, but its so in my interest area, ( ie English domestic/middlebrow fiction of the 20thC, especially relating to the wars and women's roles) that I found a copy on Amazon and have bought it! Thanks for the tip.

I have just finished reading it and found it a well-written book with believable characters and excellent portrayal of life during WW2. The insight into the effects of wearing a uniform on both the soldiers themselves and the civilians around them was especially well developed. In all a worthwhile read.

I collect Virago Modern Classics and this one is sitting here on Mount TBR, so no, I haven't read it yet but I do have it.
