Here is a book in aid of not one, but two good causes. Modern Delight is sold (I think exclusively) through Waterstone's to benefit Dyslexia Action and The London Library.
It's a collection of short but interesting and inspiring essays on what delights its contributors, many of them well known authors. For Tom Stoppard it's a day without commitments when he can do exactly as he chooses; for Michael Palin it's his three-year-old grandson, Archie, and for Justine Picardie it is shoes the colour of rubies and painting one's toenails red!
Amongst other things, Simon Sebag Montefiore delights in books, saying, "I have beloved books in every room of the house - a bathroom book, perhaps a nineteenth century French novel; a kitchen book, perhaps a war history book; and a bedroom memoir or new novel, so that I can enjoy entering a new world in each room."
For Clive James, second-hand bookshops are a source of delight and delights: " ... it's the unexpectedness that does the trick. On the web, you know what you're looking for. In a bookshop, you don't know what you're looking for until you find it. It's a lot like love."
Delightful!

I loved the essay about shelling chick peas. And of course the one by Nigel Slater, because you can never go wrong with Nigel! K x
