When we build our house we are going to put in a smallish library room that is floor to ceiling books with one of those old ladders on wheels that goes to the very top. I can't wait, to be able to sit in there in a big comfy chair with a good book and a cup of tea and perhaps a piece of cake. Makes me cozy all thinking about it, and yes I do believe books do furnish a room.

The bosun's chair sounds dangerous to me. What I've always wanted is one of those revolving tables with shelves underneath; very space saving and your favourites always to hand. I expect there's a technical name for them?

That New York Times article gives me hope. I've always said books and poetry save my life, every day... maybe they'll save the world too.

Great post. I love books about books; I have 'At Home with Books' by Estelle Ellis and now I can see I will have to have 'Books Do Furnish A Room'. It's all pipe dreams for me! But where would we be without our dreams?

Dark Puss

Books do furnish a room, yes indeed but not to the exclusion of paintings and photographs. Some of us live in very restricted spaces (for example my flat in central London) and while I love books I'm not prepared to lose any more more wall hanging space to them.
