Harriet has been reading Crocodile on the Sandbank, the first of Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody mysteries. She loved it and had to have volume two, The Curse of the Pharaohs, ready to go as soon as she reached the last page of volume one.
These books about a Victorian Egyptologist were originally recommended to me by a very well-read friend who said they were tremendous fun. Harriet agrees and is very glad to know that there are many more in the series for her to enjoy. I rather fancy them, too.
Have you read them?
Edited to add: Reading all your comments, it looks as though these books are a real treat in store!
Yes! I'm a devoted Amelia Peabody fan and have read all the books in the series. I'm not so fussed on the other detecive fiction she's written as Barbara Michaels.

Oh me too! They are a wonderful read and even continue to the second generation of this lively family. When these have all read the author has a second series about a modern museum curator, Vicky, who works in Germany. If you have access to the American company of rental books: Recordedbooks.com the author has said that their recordings of the Amelia Peabody saga are first rate and she can never think of Amelia now without her speaking with this reader's voice-- Barbara Rosenblatt. I agree with this; these read versions are superb.

I read a bunch years ago as well as her Vicky Bliss books. I really need to go back and catch up as she is a prolific writer. They are fun mysteries and Amelia Peabody is one of my favorite fictional characters. She's pretty amazing (the author)--she still puts out lots of books and is an Egyptologist, too.

I have read every single Amelia Peabody book. I love this series. I actually listened to the Recorded Books versions read by Barbara Rosenblat. She 'became' Amelia to me. Oh, Karen, I can't recommend them highly enough. And there's a new one! Peters is amazing.

These sound like great fun. I will definitely have to look for the series.

I agree with everything everyone has said. I love Amelia & the whole family, especially now that Ramses has grown up & is through that awful late adolescent phase. The Rosenblat recordings are also great, I've listened to several of the books.

Yes, they are excellent fun indeed. I love the ones where the children are grown up, especially. I'm not sure how well they stand up from the point of view of detective fiction - if you read for the puzzle. But they are extremely well-written, with a wonderfully unreliable narrator, very fun characters and an interesting and plausible setting.

I stumbled upon the Amelia Peabody series by chance on a research trip to Chicago and haven't looked back since! They are a great read and I've learnt so much about Egypt and egyptology. And did I mention I'm totally in love with Ramses?

I love Amelia Peabody - I can't tell you how many times i have read the series over and over! I love the wit with which she writes - it is just my sense of humour and I love every single book. I wish she would write more, and more, and more .....
