My thanks to Frances for letting me know that Alexander McCall Smith is to be the guest on Radio 4's Bookclub this afternoon (4pm, repeated on Thurs. 7th.), when he'll be talking to James Naughtie and an audience of readers about his Edinburgh novel 44, Scotland Street.
He is never less than wonderfully entertaining in person as on the page, so do listen if you can.
Thank you for letting us know, I look forward to listening whilst wrapped in many layers against this bitter weather. I actually prefer the Isabel Dalhousie books, do drop him a hint to write more of those would you?

This has been scheduled especially for me - it's my Special Birthday Treat!
I read the the whole series of 44 Scotland Street one after the other just before Christmas, it felt like having a whole box of chocolates without feeling sick. I was knitting presents at the same time so I could justify the time spent 'sitting' - better than shopping any day.
Not long now.....

I went on a cold but enjoyable winter walk across the South Downs but made sure I was back in the car by 4pm to listen! I agree with you, I enjoy the Isabel Dalhousie series most of all.

I met him in person at a book signing here in the States. Absolutely sweet and delightful. He stood for most of the time to greet and sign books. I was very impressed.

I agree with some of the other comments. Don't enjoy the African ones, Scotland Street is good but I love the Dalhousie novels.

Slightly late, but happy birthday, Carole! Hope you enjoyed it.

Serendipitously this was on as I was driving to work and I was charmed, I've never been as entranced by Mma Ramotswe as my Guardian-reading background would suggest. But 44 Scotland St is now on my list for this year, who couldn't be delighted by something that still makes its author laugh years later.
