I'm sure I've read Troubles, many years ago, although it wouldn't have been as far back as 1970 - and I definitely remember enjoying it although beyond that memory is hazy. Must have had it from the library as I can't find it on the shelf to refresh my memory.

Thrilled to see Nina Bawden in the short list. I didnot read this one, but reread both Carry's War and Rebel On a Rock this month. Guess what I will be reading soon!

Linda Gillard

FIRE FROM HEAVEN was the beginning of my enthusiasm for the historical novels of Mary Renault.

I second what Linda G says! Mary R is wonderful as is the Farrell. I have read the Birds in the Trees but cannot remember it, but Bawden is usually terrific. I will vote for Troubles, I think.

As I recall - and its a long time ago - Vivisector is much harder than Voss. You have been warned!

Claire (Paperback Reader)

Karen, you simply MUST read The Driver's Seat! Take yourself to the Princes Street branch of Waterstone's, to that vast Scottish section, at your earliest convenience to pick yourself up a copy. Spark for the win!

Will do, Claire!

Cornflower

I am undaunted, Lindsay!
