A little more on our Book Group title for January now that my copy has at last turned up. Firstly the superficial, and I do like this cover of The Bookshop better than the one over there in the sidebar; more importantly, some cover quotes to whet the appetite:
"A gem, a vintage narrative ... a classic whose force as a piece of physical and moral map-making has not merely lasted but has actually improved in the passage of year", says the New York Times, while The Spectator goes for "Solid and satisfying. Every action in it matters, however small." The TLS comments "Penelope Fitzgerald's resources of odd people are impressively rich. And this is not just a gallery of quirky still lives; these people appear in vignettes, wryly, even comically animated ... A marvellously piercing fiction."
It will be interesting to see how this slight book measures up to the above.
Just to re-iterate, we'll begin talking about the book on Saturday, 22nd. January, so there's plenty of time to join in if you'd like to do so.
