Well I would never have guessed Scott!

Thanks for telling us.

Poor old Scott! He is so out of fashion that he never even crossed my mind. I love the log book idea.

I've never read any of him - has anyone here?

No I would not have guessed Scott either. When doing my A levels Scott came up, but it was for my history A level (in his influence in the nienteenth century idea of Scotland) rather than my Eng Lit A level.

I've still not read him at all, but ages ago when I did a short post asking that very question, we had a few responses: http://cornflower.typepad.com/domestic_arts_blog/2007/11/scott-ish-quest.html

Dickens may have written fewer, but - given the sheer length of some of his novels - he may not have written less! And he's incomparably the greater writer, imaginative and inventive in ways that Scott could not have dreamed of.

I suspect that Dickens also had a much wider range, but this is, I think, not all that important - range in a novelist is wonderful and a great gift, but (for example) Austen and Powell have apparently limited ranges, but are non-pareil.
