Here's a partial look at the 'distaff side' of One Hundred Writers in One Box: Postcards from Penguin Modern Classics, all are famous authors, but some faces are better known than others - can you put names to them?

Speaking of literary ladies, I have no pictures to show for it but I spent a lovely few hours on Saturday catching up with my old friend Sarah Salway, novelist, poet, short story writer and newly appointed Canterbury Laureate. Appropriately, our rendezvous was the Scottish Poetry Library from where we went up to the Scottish Storytelling Centre for tea, and then had a wander through Edinburgh's Old and New Town, talking books all the way!
I only recognise Katherine Mansfield and Virginia Woolf... poor show, Simon!
Very excited about this boxset though, hadn't heard about it before - I'm going to wait and see if anyone gets it for my birthday next week, and if not - then I'll buy it for myself!

I-Spy Flora Thompson there and Angela Carter. I may have to ask for this set for Christmas.

I read them all regularly! No seriously, recognise hardly any, but am reading the one in the middle - "Leslie Stephen's girl" - at the moment. Regards, Lindsay (Tokyo)

You are correct, of course, so well done, all.

Well done, Ruth. Just one still to identify.

So top middle IS Muriel Spark, is it? She looks Irish so I hazarded a guess.
So that leaves bottom middle...
I felt that Gertrude Stein ought to be there but bottom middle looks too beautiful, too soft for her.
I'm guessing that the photo was taken in the 1940s.
Will you give us a clue?

Is the one in the bottom middle Rumer Godden?

I'm not sure but I think the bottom row centre is Pamela Frankau (spelling?) Virginia is there - when is she not?

It was a lovely walk, and yes I think we managed to cover lots and lots of books - even if we didn't actually find the bookshop we were after!
