Well done to everyone who correctly identified some of the authors the other day, but four remained nameless. Here they all are then, from top to bottom, left to right:
Roald Dahl, Ian Fleming, John Steinbeck (author of a memorable CBG book)
Saki, Raymond Chandler & cat, Rudyard Kipling
Kahlil Gibran (so now you know what the author of The Prophet looked like!), Evelyn Waugh (we've read him, too), R.K. Narayan (another CBG author).
"Raymond Chandler & cat" !
That's his beloved Persian cat Taki I think. His cat wrote to others (in this case Christmas 1948):
"Your rat tail is all the fashion now. I prefer a bushy plume, carried straight up. You are Siamese and your ancestors lived in trees. Mine lived in palaces. It has been suggested to me that I am a bit of a snob."
A little too anthropomorphised for my tastes I think!
