"London life was very full and exciting [...] But in London there would be no greenhouse with a glossy tank, and no apple-room, and no potting-shed, earthy and warm, with bunches of poppy heads hanging from the ceiling, and sunflower seeds in a wooden box, and bulbs in thick paper bags, and hanks of tarred string, and lavender drying on a tea-tray."
From Lolly Willowes by Sylvia Townsend Warner.
These excerpts are wonderful for whetting my appetite to read this especially as I have just heard that the library has found a very old copy in their reserve which should be with me in a few days!
In the meantime I am reading a book of her short stories The Music at Long Verney and loving them - all quite different but fascinating.

I have the short stories on my wish list - so glad to hear you're enjoying them, Liz.
I found Lolly Willowes a very interesting, very thought-provoking book.
