Here's a marvellous competition from Penguin Books, following in the virtual footsteps of Robert Macfarlane whose The Old Ways: A Journey on Foot
will be out in paperback later this month:
Penguin are looking for a Wayfarer, a person who will travel around the UK in July and August, visiting some of the Old Ways paths but also following some of their own, travelling into landscapes by discovering their stories, and reporting on their travels by way of blog posts, videos, social media and so on. The position is a paid one, and sounds like a marvellous opportunity for anyone with free time over the summer and, crucially, the wandering gene!
You'll find all the details including how to enter at A Journey on Foot (and there are posts on The Old Ways here, here and here).
Sounds like the sort of job that my late dad would have loved!
As a country man by birth, he was never happier than when out and about walking in the countryside and his favourite period at work was when he was 'loaned' from his job as a land surveyor at the local council to the county council so that he could survey all the footpaths in Bedfordshire to establish which ones were still passable and which had become either overgrown or had been ploughed up.
He always came back from his forays with numerous stories to tell of the people he had met and things he had seen and was absolutely in his element.
Come to think of it, I wouldn't mind the job myself if work and family commitments didn't make it impossible!

I've been waiting for this to come into paperback.
What a wonderful way to spend the summer. But..... have just ordered the book and will have to enjoy the Old Ways from my garden (possibly!) chair.

A great opportunity for a student, say, or an aspiring nature/travel writer.

Thanks for the link. I've passed it on to a couple of lads I know who have just finished their degrees.
