I think you may have taken care of some of my holiday reading. I have just ordered The Girl With the pearl Earring.

I do hope you'll enjoy it, Sue. I'd never read it until the other day - despite having seen the film twice - and I thought Tracy Chevalier shows great restraint in the way she tells her story, and her novel is subtle but very powerful. It's also a brilliantly effective use of the first person narrative.

Just finished The Heir in one afternoon. I couldn't put it down. A great book for a summer afternoon in the garden.
