Claire

Thank you. I think you've helped me with a birthday present dilemma.

Susan in TX

Ooo, I saw this back in October and popped it into my Amazon wish list, but it doesn't appear to be available now -either here or over at book depository. They had the paperback listed as coming in 2016, so maybe it's a temporary thing. At any rate, he has become one of my favorite "comfort read" authors, so I'll keep a look out for it. Thanks for the quotes and the picture. Never having been to Edinburgh, I sometimes go to google maps and use their satellite feature to see what he's describing. I'm always amazed that it's *all really there.* It's definitely on my list of places to visit whenever we cross the pond. :)

Glad to be of service, Claire!
It's a lovely book, very much AMcCS's personal view of his home city, and all the better for that.

The publisher's website gives some information about getting hold of a copy, Susan, but it may not be of much help to you in the US: http://www.rcahms.gov.uk/news/coming-soon-a-work-of-beauty
I hope you will manage a trip to Edinburgh some time, and if you do I don't think you'll be disappointed!

Mr Cornflower

"other cities can be fantoosh (flashy and showy)..." I wonder if he had a particular city in mind....

As an Edinburgh child going to Jenner's was both a treat and some what awe-inspiring. However on recent (brief) visits I have been rather disappointed. What do other Edinburgh residents feel?

Cornflower

AMcCS is ever tactful.

It's not what it was!
I haven't been in for a while but I would say that the takeover by House of Fraser seemed to change its character, and not for the better.

Jenner's is now on my list of places to visit in Scotland along with the Jamieson factory and the Willow Tea Rooms. Plus all the wonderful bookstores I've been hearing about over the years.
