Mr. C., Wodehouse fan that he is, found this picture of P.G. and dachshund in Blackwell's on Saturday. I was elsewhere in the shop at the time but when he showed it to me I went and bought my own copy. It was on a stand with many other writers' portraits, all grim, dour, miserable, tormented-looking souls to whose pictures I wouldn't give house room; Plum and Jed, however, are welcome on my desk - thank goodness for smiley people who write cheery books!
Here's a gallery of writers and their dogs by photographer Jill Krementz.

That is a nice photo. Animals often play a big part in his books, notably the pig Empress of Blandings. I also love his short story "Goodbye to all Cats". As the title suggests cats do play a prominent role.

There's something poignant about the gallery of photos. It's the date 'stamps' mixed with fact that a lot of these dogs will no longer be around. I remember reading Ann Patchett's essay about her dog Rose with a lump in my throat. I just love her writing.
What a nice happy photo Karen, and a trip to Blackwells sounds just the ticket.

I enjoyed the photos. It's so fitting that Buckley had a King Charles Spaniel. Perfect fit. And of course Donna Tartt has a pug. I'm not surprised at all. ;-)
