I've had another look back at my journal to see what I was reading around the beginning of December in each of the last few years, and barring two novels about which I was less than enthusiastic, here's a handful. The relevant posts may be worth a look if anything takes your fancy, but suffice to say these are all jolly good books.
The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper (this post may be helpful for anyone wanting to read the series).
The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert (post here).
High Rising by Angela Thirkell (post here).
The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey (post here).
Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson (post here).
The Mitfords: Letters between Six Sisters edited by Charlotte Mosley (post here).
The Tiger in the Smoke by Margery Allingham (post here).
I did read High Rising and one other book by Thirkell, and enjoyed them, and I would like to read the Mitford sisters letters.

I loved the book by E. Gilbert.

That collection of letters is a great introduction to them , Terra.

The only Thirkell I have read is Wild Strawberries and I was totally underwhelmed by it, should I try another of hers?

High Rising is much better, I think, than Wild Strawberries, but those are the only two novels of hers I've read so far so I can't speak for the rest (or for the relative places of these two in the canon).
I liked HR enough to give a copy to a friend, come to think of it, so that says something.

Thank you for this, I shall re-consider in the New Year, I
have too many books awaiting my attention at the moment but will be taking some
of them to Lochgilphead in the very near future which will leave a gap to be
filled.

I've read a couple on here, and see others I have on my TBR list...think we have similar tastes!
