I've had a look back at my journal to see what I was reading around this time in January of years past and I've chosen a few of the best books.
(Links lead mostly to posts.)
The Secret Intensity of Everyday Life by William Nicholson
The Hare with Amber Eyes by Edmund de Waal
The Cunning Man by Robertson Davies
An Equal Stillness by Francesca Kay
The Wild Places by Robert Macfarlane
The Blue Flower by Penelope Fitzgerald
Good Behaviour by Molly Keane - no post as such, but see this one.
Just by the way, there's a biography of Molly Keane by her daughter Sally Phipps coming out this week.
I loved An Equal Stillness - it comes very high on my list of all-time Cornflower greats!

Glad you liked it too, Mary.
As to "all-time Cornflower greats", might have to give some thought to what I'd put on that list!

I must make a note to re-order and have another go at Wild Places, had it on loan but was sidetracked by other books and couldn't renew it as it was requested.

Do see if you can get it again, Sue - Robert Macfarlane's work is always worth seeking out.

At New Year I read Elisabeth De Waal's The Exiles Return, which made me return to Edmund's book. There is much about Elisabeth in his The Hare with Amber Eyes. I was surprised how powerful a re-read was, perhaps even more emotional than the first time. What an extraordinary writer he is.

You know, I do the same exact thing. I use GoodReads to see what I was reading that month a year ago, or two, or more. This is a definite sign of book addiction. :-)
