I've had little more than a passing interest in book prizes this year as my reading has seen me mostly in meandering literary backwaters rather than the fast-moving mainstream, but nevertheless I am sufficiently au courant to be very pleased that Waterstones have chosen La Belle Sauvage as their book of the year.

Meandering literary backwaters is just so much more rewarding don't you think?

I agree that the backwaters are more rewarding and I am so pleased that Waterstones have awarded Belle Sauvage Book of the Year.

I have no interest at all in book prizes (and that should be taken as a neutral statement of fact). I am not sure any book I have really enjoyed has won one (probably that should be taken as a statement of ignorance).

The book was certainly worth the wait.

I am always glad when a book or author I rate highly gets the publicity and increased sales that a prize generally brings, but prizes per se can be almost meaningless (I could speak at length on the subject!).

I will allow myself to read it soon, I have a small fruit cake and a bottle of Blanquette de Limoux to keep me company.

That sounds perfect.

I am with you meandering in the backwaters and discovering authors new to me and now beloved.

They are well-populated waters, in more ways than one!
