Just in case you haven't seen it, Persephone Books are running a Mothering Sunday offer on their bestselling Persephone Classics. Until Saturday 10th. March*, all 12 of the Classics will be available for £7.50 instead of the usual £10.
I haven't read The World that was Ours or Cheerful Weather for the Wedding but I can warmly recommend the other ten, and particular favourites include The Fortnight in September (post here), Someone at a Distance (by the excellent Dorothy Whipple), Agnes Jekyll's Kitchen Essays (see this post and this one), and Good Evening Mrs. Craven by Mollie Panter-Downes.
*Order by the 8th. for delivery in time for Mothering Sunday.
Do try The World that was Ours, Cornflower - it's as good as a thriller. One of my favourite Persephones.

Thank you, Mary - duly noted.

Having read the description of The World that was Ours, I know that I would be very uncomfortable reading it. I have read most of the Persephone Classics and have only ordered, so far, Mrs Craven and suspect that I will order the Laski before the end of the offer, or the Streatfeild. I was unable to see the point of Cheerful Weather for the Wedding even after the third read. If you would like to have my copy I should be happy to send it to you.

I've read all of them and they are some of my favorite Persephones. The World That Was Ours is excellent but definitely not a comfort read, it's quite harrowing. Definitely worth reading for the historical significance, though it's quite different than most of the other Persephones.

Toffeeapple, what a very kind thought! I wouldn't wish to put you to that trouble but I appreciate the offer enormously. Thank you.

It's interesting that every so often Persephone publish something atypical - see for instance Simon's review of Beth Gutcheon's Still Missing: http://www.stuckinabook.com/still-missing-by-beth-gutcheon/

There don't seem to have been new classics for a while (is that right?) - I try to resist duplicating, but some of the covers are too beautiful not to...

They are!

I too can recommend The World that was Ours. I was exhausted at the end of it, but didn't regret reading it one bit. Still Missing is another good read. Persephone followed the book by showing the film of this as one of their events. Both worth reading/watching.

Many thanks, Joan.
I'd love to go to a Persephone event!
