"[...] they reached two stone gate piers topped with griffins, marking the entrance to a long gravel drive. As they walked along it, the dark shape of the mansion rose out of the gloom before them, a wide, imposing grey-stone building, two flights of steps running up to the door. This must be the house she had seen from the boat, but at this distance it seemed not so much a house as a fortress: the turret appearing to swell into the darkness. There was something oddly familiar about it too, like a picture in a storybook she had read as a child."

Anna Mazzola's The Story Keeper sounds promising, don't you think?
That would definitely make me read on!

I was hugely impressed with her first book, The Unseeing and recommended it to a lot of people. That quote definitely makes me want to read this one.

So far (I'm over 100 pages in) it's living up to its promise!

I haven't read The Unseeing but I might well, given how much I'm enjoying this one.

Sounds like the perfect gift for my sister or college roommate, both of whom majored in Folklore in college (with time for the kind giver to read it first!). Not out yet in the US but I will try her first book.
