I gave you a snippet of Anna Mazzola's The Story Keeper recently. It is a very enjoyable, well-researched book; its sense of place - Skye - is strong, its folkloric theme adds a pleasing plangent tone, its gothic/sensation leanings give it suitably muted colour, but I sensed a modern story struggling at times to sit comfortably within the corset of its historical (1857) setting. A good read, but set next to its obvious shelf-companions Sarah Moss's Night Waking and Karin Altenberg's Island of Wings, I'd say those two have the edge.
I haven't read this but I do like Sarah Moss's work, I notice that she has a book newly released. I also enjoyed Island of Wings which really came to life when I was luck enough to visit St Kilda.

To visit St. Kilda must be quite something!

It was, I found it hard to believe I was there. We were in the schoolhouse and the church, all very much Island of Wings territory. We were also taken around the stacks to see the amazing seabird life (which I realise you wouldn't enjoy!). All on a wonderful blue sky and sun day last year, we were so very lucky.
