A quest, an adventure, a setting to rights ... a tale beautifully constructed and eloquently, intelligently told: Rosemary Sutcliff's The Eagle of the Ninth is one of the best novels I've read this year.
You can find the handsome Slightly Foxed edition here.
Surely a re-read? It's part of a trilogy so I strongly commend the others to you.

Mr. C's first time as well. He read it after me (in under 24 hours) and loved it too.

There’s a crossing point marked with a stone where the Ninth crossed the River Welland just outside Stamford.

If I'm ever in those parts I shall look for it! Thank you, Elizabeth.

Doubly surprised! How on earth did both of you miss out on this aged ~ 10?

I'm afraid that I was engrossed in Richmal Crompton's Just William books then on to "Kidnapped" and "Robinson Crusoe" and "The Hobbit"
