The Rest is History podcast has just released two episodes on JRR Tolkien and The Lord of the Rings respectively, and I commend them to you whether you are a Tolkien fan or not. The discussions between historians Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook are informed, eloquent, engaging, and consider the author and his works in a broad cultural context, perfect for those who already know a lot about the man behind the books and enlightening for anyone who is less familiar with him.

I second the recommendation. This is one of my favorite podcasts, and this is a perfect example of why I enjoy it so much. I am not a Tolkien fan (I've read The Hobbit, never interested in TLOTR) but I was completely engaged and appreciative of their take on this landmark of 20th century culture.
Their episode on Agatha Christie was excellent as well.
