The Secret Hours by Mick Herron - more here - and Helen Humphreys' And a Dog called Fig, a memoir/meditation on the writing life and the life-enhancing companionship of dogs; both books stand out from the rest of the month's reading.
I hope you've had a satisfying reading month and have something good to sit down with as the days darken.
I am reading Berlin Alexanderplatz (in English!) at the moment.

My beloved on-line book group has started our first fiction piece, The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride. It is EXCELLENT!
Also, I am read Ann Leary's The Children, which I'm also enjoying, having just finished all 575 pages of A.N. Wilson's VICTORIA. That one left me a bit bemused (but triumphant!). Not sure I am a fan of Wilson's writing.

You introduce me to the best dog books! I just read And a Dog Called Fig and loved it. I bought it for the daughter of a friend, who has a dog called Fig. I decided to read it before I gave it to her.
A while ago, based on your blog, I bought the book Monty Don wrote about his dogs and enjoyed that one, too. I passed it on too a friend who loves Monty Don and Golden Retrievers.
We're dogless now, Irish Wolfhounds being the breed we love. They're leaners, though, and now that we're in our 70s, it's hard to stay upright without a large dog leaning affectionately against you!
